Competing my pair of bar reviews is the immensely Competing my pair of bar reviews is the immensely special (to me) dram of d.1986 11 year old BenRiach from @adelphi1826

Scouring the whisky book at @jackroseindc and I luckily found a birth year bottle! I'm a big fan of BenRiach so I knew I had to give this a try.

Full notes can be found on my website as well as over on r/scotch #linkinbio

Nose: Potent and punchy. Lemon tart, graham cracker crust, cheesecake. Sweet vanilla and buttered toffee. Tropical melon and guava. Paraffin wax and Play-Doh.

Palate: Lemony curd, zesty citrus, poppy seed muffins. Intensely viscous and flavorful like fresh pressed Greek olive oil. Express the lemon and orange oils. Honeydew melon. Bubble gum.

Finish: Charcoal and industrial. Cast iron, tin, surface rust. Orange creamsicle, tarte raspberry. Sweet tobacco and burnt sugars galore!

Trying not to find over this one entirely as it definitely has some faults. The industrial plasticine note is not enjoyable. Thankfully it's mostly hidden by the citrus and burnt sugars from the cask.

Long gone from store shelves but if you happen to be at Jack Rose, buy yourself at pour. 1986 bottles are quite difficult to come by!

Today's review is a fun one! A Thompson Bros. bott Today's review is a fun one! A Thompson Bros. bottled 11 year old "Orkney" with a 6 month Caol Ila finish.

I've had plenty of HP but their OB is usually expensive and bottled at 43%. Every bottle I've owned has been thanks to independent bottlers. I care about things like non chill filtration and natural presentation so I'm glad places like @dornochdistillery exist.

Nose: "Peated Riesling". Fresh cut flowers. Dried, tart fruit - sultanas, pears, and apricots. Kelp, muscles, brine.

Palate: Intense peat! Molasses funk, ginger cookies, cardamom. Bready salinity like salted soft pretzels. Fresh cut wood. Sweet and savory.

Finish: Tons of grass and peat. Grilled peaches. Grilled Romain with Parmesan and cracked black pepper. Medicinal and metallic peat. Copper and nickel. Dried seaweed. Almond tart.

A unique highland Park expression namely due to the peat. The lack of viscosity on the palate slightly diminishes the experience for me. Very palatable bitterness that balances the medicinal peat and brine that I love! A good sidekick bottle to say Laphroaig cask strength as this plays well with other Islays on your shelf.

    Part 2 of my @westlandwhiskey r/bourbon picks from Part 2 of my @westlandwhiskey r/bourbon picks from @t8ke.review.

This one from a French fortified wine cask called Banyuls. It's a wine that I'm completely unfamiliar with but was excited to give this one a try.

Nose: A mix of musty old books and mushrooms. Fermenting sour, like apricot pomace. Acidic olive brine and sweet balsamic vinegar. Fresh butterfat solids.

Palate: Salted caramel and vanilla first sip. Wonderful baking spices - coriander, mint, cinnamon. Cherries, raisins, and prunes. Grape leaves and dolmades. Clay and graphite.

Finish: On to the finish where all the dried tannins lay in wait. Minerality of calcium, chalk, sulfur, and clay. Medicinal "berry" flavor like a mushy near flavorless raspberry. Bitter grapefruit peel and cherrywood.

A challenging bottle and quite cask driven I suspect. Not the dessert wine I expected but a uniqueness that is both intriguing and off-putting at the same time. A very odd combination of flavors that grow on you but I'm not convinced it's right for me.

A wonderful, well aged, Glen Elgin today to review A wonderful, well aged, Glen Elgin today to review. A distillery that is slowly becoming a favorite to replace my go-to Clynelish. I had to give this one a try when I was at @jackroseindc last week and I'm very happy that I did.

Nose - Light floral malt and expected bourbon cask influenced fruit. Apple pie, pie crust, burnt sugars. Fruit orchard and bloom, dewy grasses. Pleasant tobacco aroma and expressed citrus oil.

Palate - undoubtedly first fill bourbon with pears, apples, and lovely oak flavors. Apple cinnamon tart. Leavened dough. Wet tobacco leaves like a cigar and a slight charcoal or barrel charge smokiness to it. Wonderful baking spices.

Finish - Mildly tannic but good balance. Salinity that I didn't expect like applewood smoked herring. Water really brought out the fruit orchard flavors. Pear and apple peels. Lemongrass, slightly acidic, pleasant orange blossom water quality.

A simple and straightforward malt that does the Java setting up your palate quite well. Delicate and unassuming but digging deeper there's a touch more complexity to be coaxed out. Delicious in its own rights but not a bottle that will necessarily excite you.
